The Stitched Ledger
a basement dive under the tannery where fences meet thieves
You duck down a narrow stair between tanning pits and the stink of reagents, and the air cools to sour beer and mildew. The cellar is low-ceilinged, lit by guttering iron sconces and a single oil lamp behind the bar; benches are scarred with knife nicks and old blood. Men and women in patched coats keep to themselves over clay flags and a low counter—fences with ink-stained fingers, runners with wrapped-up hands, a watchman trading names for coin. A chain hangs from the ceiling where bales were once lowered; its links make a soft, metallic accompaniment to whispered bargains and the occasional barked laugh.
A warped scrap of cured hide, hand-stitched to a slat of oak; a crude icon of a ledger and a patched coin purse are burned into the leather. The edges are singed and damp from cellar steam; no words, just the image.
