The Hem and Hinge

the basement where bargains breathe

Stairs that reek of tanbark and stale beer dump you into a low-ceilinged cellar lit by guttering whale-oil lamps. The air is thick with the sour tang of soaking hides, pipe smoke and the metallic tang of coin. Rough benches crowd around mismatched barrels; conversations are half-whispered, hands remain within easy reach of daggers. A barred hatch in the floor leads deeper into the tannery above; a map of locked doors, secret drop points and names scrawled in charcoal covers one wall. The crowd is a patchwork of furtive eyes: cloak-hooded buyers pushing parcels across the bar, a constable's hat abandoned on a stool, and a pair of city-watcher informants pretending to play dice. The barkeep moves with the ease of someone used to reading people better than their words—welcome enough if you have coin, useful if you have information, and disposable if you interfere with business.

Over the door

A soot-dark iron hoop with a stitched leather swatch looped through it; it's pitted and damp with tannery runoff. No words, only a crudely hammered symbol of a fox's paw.

The keeper

Gerrin Mallor

Human

Manner

Gerrin runs the place like a ledger—quiet, practical and slow to anger; he smiles when it serves him and shuts you out with one look when it doesn't. He remembers debts and favours in equal measure and treats talk as currency: loose tongues are routed fast, valuable silence is rewarded.

Quirk

He polishes the same brass coin between fingers when listening, counting impressions only he understands.

Stats

Use the Criminal stat block; carries a hidden stiletto and a small ledger under the bar (DC 13 Perception to spot).
House special

Fox-Paw Flip

4 cp

An ale warmed with a shard of spiced hide oil; it blunts nerves and sharpens attention—drinkers gain advantage on one Stealth check within the next hour but suffer disadvantage on Persuasion checks for 10 minutes as their speech tightens.

A wiry tiefling who keeps the ale flowing, slides messages tucked under mugs, and watches pockets with a hawk's patience.

Regulars

Sable Keer

A slick fence known for moving rare hides and who always asks after the ledger Gerrin 'misplaced'.

Merek 'Knuckles' Jorl

A bruiser for hire with a soft spot for a lost apprentice; he drinks, gossips and will break a nose for a promise kept.

Silkmaster Coren

A well-clothed merchant who appears rarely, pays in heavy coin, and wants a 'particular' pelt brought without questions.

Rumours
  1. 1

Gerrin's ledger lists a drop for 'Silkmaster Coren' this week at the old tannery sluice — a crate with a hidden compartment that disappeared last night.

  2. 2

Merek 'Knuckles' Jorl is looking for his apprentice, Jory, who vanished after stealing a pale hide marked with a red stitch and was last seen near the East Gate watchtower.

  3. 3

Sable Keer is organizing a midnight auction beneath the dry docks to sell an item called the 'Coppered Mask'—several buyers are willing to kill for it.

Look out for
Loose floorboard behind the bar hides Gerrin's ledger (DC 13 Perception to find).A chalkboard of coded delivery routes and drop-times pinned to the wall (DC 12 Investigation to decipher).
