The Midnight Ledger
the inn that appears when the city forgets its streets
You find The Midnight Ledger only after the streets tilt wrong and the lamps throw you into unfamiliar alleys. The door breathes cool air scented with citrus peels and old parchment; low, amber lamps hang behind smoked glass, turning the common room into a small pool of cautious light. Conversation is hushed and precise, like ledger entries: people exchange folded papers, point at a wall-map traced in pencil, or write something in the inn’s large book before they leave. Music is a single mournful reed between silences. The clientele is a scatter of lost couriers, cartographers with ink-stained fingers, and travelers who say they “arrived a different way.”
A weathered brass tablet engraved with an open ledger and a single inked quill; the brass is dull with finger-grooves from years of unseen hands, no words, only the engraved icon

Tavri · barmaid
She moves through the tables like a shadow with a tray, always knowing which guest needs a poured ear or a poured glass.
Bosun · cellar-keeper
A squat, taciturn human who tends the wine racks and mutters tasting notes as if reciting the names of old enemies.
Garel the Mapper
A weather-beaten halfling who trades copies of alley sketches for wine and is obsessively looking for the Clockkeeper's House mentioned in a torn folio.
Serrin Vahl
A former courier, now a nervous human who pays to retrace routes and believes a pickpocket ring uses a certain midnight alley as a backdoor to the noble wards.
Old Rook
An ex-watchman (dwarf) who naps against the ledger and claims he once escorted a mysterious parcel to a place called the Widow's Ledger and never came back the same.
1
Garel says the Clockkeeper's House on Lowspire Lane keeps a sealed ledger that records the city's lost addresses; he wants someone to retrieve one page.
2
Serrin claims a gang called the Finger-Mont uses a mirror-alley behind the old tannery at midnight to smuggle documents into the noble quarter.
3
Old Rook remembers a parcel he escorted to 'the Widow's Ledger'—a shuttered bookshop near the quay—whose proprietor was never seen again after the ledger inside began whispering names.
