The Iron Ledger
the inn counting every coin for the reeve
Low beams sag above a single long table; the floorboards here have been beaten smooth by boots and scuffed by shackles. Candlelight fights a constant thin haze of smoke and cheap ale; voices speak in tight, nervous bursts and thugs in the reeve's livery hang at the far end like storm clouds, laughing too loudly. The walls are papered with official proclamations in the reeve's neat hand and with clipped receipts pinned over one another — levies, fines, names. When you step in the innkeeper's gaze measures you like a ledger entry: is this coin worth trouble? In the corner by the hearth sits a child with stained mittens who watches every person who goes in or out.
A square iron plate nailed to weathered oak, stained with streaks of rust; etched on it is a stylized ledger and a clenched fist. The iron rattles faintly in the wind and the plate bears fresh scratch marks as if someone tried to prise it loose.

Stats
Halvor's Bitter
6 cpA harsh nettle spirit mixed with a dash of rye and a twist of lemon rind — it warms the chest and sharpens your tongue; drink two and you'll speak more freely than is wise in a room full of spies.
Poor (5e lifestyle: about 2 sp a day)
Magga · barmaid
Keen-eared and quick with a tray, she flashes a look to warn Brenk the instant a new thug enters.
Tull · stablehand
Big, soft-spoken, and often stony-faced; he bribes the reeve's guards for knowledge of patrol routes so he can steer travelers in safely.
Corin Denvoss
The miller who pays the reeve's levies with a stony jaw and keeps talking about a hidden clause in the ledger that will ruin him if revealed.
Old Hest
A retired forester who owes the reeve a year's worth of taxes and is nursing a pistol hidden under his coat while he mutters about ambushing the next tax cart.
Miren
A quick-footed girl who serves ale and listens; she's searching for her missing brother and keeps a scrap of rope tied around her wrist as a promise to find him.
1
The reeve's ledger lists a 'Black Mark' fee recently added to Corin Denvoss's account — Brenk whispered that if someone shows Corin a copy of the ledger he'll either be ruined or rise up.
2
A tax cart carrying coin for the reeve was ambushed two nights ago near Willowford; witnesses say a woman with a grey cloak and a bow led the raiders and left a carved wolf tooth as a calling card.
3
Miren claims her brother Jory was taken by a pair of the reeve's thugs after he refused to work the reeve's fields; they were seen dragging him toward the reeve's holding yard beyond the granary.
