Ledger Lash Lantern

the inn beneath the reeve's shadow

You push through a low door and the tavern hits you like a warning. The air smells of boiled cabbage, sour beer and the iron tang of too many bruises. Light is scant — a single guttering lantern over the bar, a few candles on the benches — and shadows sit heavier in the corners where thick-armed men linger. Conversation drops when strangers enter; knives slide half-hidden from cuffs, and a framed notice near the bar lists fines and curfews stamped with the reeve's official seal. The crowd is mostly farmers and cart-drivers nursing long pints while keeping one eye on the door; on slower nights a pair of reeve's thugs occupy the back table, elbows on the wood like carved knots. The bar itself is scarred with blade nicks and a ring of gossip: a ring of coppers hammered into the wood where someone once paid in pennies. If you listen, you catch the soft scratch of quill on paper — the keeper keeps accounts, and those accounts are read by a man in the reeve's colors more often than he'd like to admit.

Over the door

A battered iron hook holds a soot-darkened lantern and a water-stained ledger nailed to a board; the lantern's glass is cracked and someone has carved three tally marks into the ledger's cover.

The keeper

Marek Vossin

human

Manner

Grim and practical, Marek runs the place with brusque efficiency; he will refuse service in a heartbeat if it keeps trouble minimal. He treats regulars like a ledger: each favor or debt is noted and may be repaid in blood or coin.

Quirk

He flips a small brass token — stamped with three tally marks — between his fingers whenever someone mentions the reeve.

Stats

Use the Commoner stat block with +2 to Persuasion and a hidden dagger (1d4) under the bar; AC 10 (padded jerkin).
House special

Reeve's Rust

6 cp

A double measure of the house spirit flavored with bitter root; it warms the throat and loosens tongues — many patrons become blunter about what they've seen after one cup.

Regulars

Joren Millhand

A thin miller who brought his broken cart in for repairs and wonders which of the reeve's men will take his next harvest as 'tax.'

Old Beren

A retired soldier who lost an eye fighting bandits and now keeps information about arriving caravans — and dreams of one chance at retribution.

Sila the Hem

A seamstress who quietly pays Marek small sums to blank her name from the ledger; she knows more than she lets on.

Rumours
  1. 1

A reeve's deputy named Halrun is expecting a midnight shipment of 'tax grain' from a coastal trader called the Grey Skiff — the shipment is thinner than the records claim.

  2. 2

Someone found a bloodstained boot near the old mill; Joren Millhand whispers that an unmarked cart left with two crates for the reeve last week.

  3. 3

Old Beren has a scratched map showing a hollow under the chapel where smugglers hide boxes labeled with the reeve's seal.

Look out for
A visible, nailed ledger above the bar with daily receipts and a hidden removable page Marek uses to track illicit deals.A carved notch in the east bench where patrons can slide coins and messages out of sight; used as an off-the-books tip or secret drop.
