The Hollow Lantern
the inn that keeps its own light
You step under a low lintel into a wide, timbered common room where smoke has hung between beams long enough to become part of the wood. The light is thin — the lanterns over the bar sputter with a cold blue flame that never quite warms the room. Patrons speak in low tones; the hearth spits every so often as if protesting. There is a persistent dampness in the air, the tang of old ale and iron, and sometimes the soft impression of footsteps on the stair with no one ascending. A narrow stairwell leads up to a long, shadowed corridor of doors; beneath a warped hatch in the scullery, cold air breathes up carrying a smell like wet linen and something older.
A black iron hoop holds three dented lanterns dimly lit by blue glass; the lowest lantern dangles crooked and swings in a breeze that no one else feels. The paint is flaking; a faint scorch mark rings the lowest lamp.

Old Marrek says the brass locket his grandmother wore was pried from a corpse hidden beneath the cellar flagstones and that it hums when placed near the sealed hatch.

Sive of Nettleford claims she transcribed a name—'Ila Vey'—whispered nightly from the wall above room seven; the name matches an unmarked grave in the lane outside the inn.
3
Corren the Ledger-Keeper hints a merchant named Halston paid the innkeeper in a sealed ledger and the last page lists a location called 'Greenfen Lock' where a chest was stashed before the house turned sour.
