Cleaver & Ledger
the pit beneath the slaughterhouse
Stairs: a slick crawl of stone and sawdust that smells of iron and boiled guts. The cellar is low-ceilinged and bone-dark except for a few chains of lanterns swinging above the pit; conversation is a growl, broken by the wet slap of bodies and the ring of brass upon brass. The air is thick with smoke, sweat, cheap cider, and the animal tang that never quite leaves the rafters. Spectators squeeze on benches hewn from offal barrels; gambling stones and soiled coin cups clatter on a long table that doubles as a ledger for bets. At the pit's lip, fighters are oiled, chained, and cheered — or cursed. Muscle and scars move like ritual; someone always has a knife pressed against the back of someone's neck. The whole room feels like a plan that can turn on a dime: a whispered name, the flip of a coin, or the sharp squeal of the house bell that opens the trapdoor below. Newcomers are watched before being spoken to; friends are fewer than enemies, and all debts are kept in ink and blood.
A rusted cleaver nailed to a warped wooden board; faded chalk tally marks and dark stains scar the metal. No words — the cleaver itself is the warning.

Pitheart Grog
1 spA bitter mix of cider, burnt spice, and a drop of iron — sharp enough to steady hands and blur minor aches; two swallows soothe courage, a third invites reckless bets.
Squalid (5e lifestyle: about 1 sp a day)
Hett · bouncer
A scarred ex-pit-fighter who reads wagers as well as muscle; he collects debts with an even hand.
Mern · barmaid
Quick with a cup and a darting smile, she never stays in the same place long enough for trouble to pin her down.
Crag · stablehand
The man who ferries fighters and carcasses through the back alleys; he knows which wagons are watched and which are empty.
Garn of the Knives
A small, wiry gang lieutenant who runs bets for the Red Line crew and always looks to buy favours cheaply.
Mira Soothand
A compact fighter famous for throat strikes; she owes Brum a marked debt and is saving for one last match.
Inspector Halvorsen
A plain-faced city watcher who comes in late under the guise of sleep — he’s quietly tracing a string of stolen livestock.
1
A wagon of prized heifers bound for the eastern manor never left the slaughterhouse yard; the driver, Jorren, vanished and his lockbox held a brass key stamped with the mark of Marrek the Butcher.
2
Garn of the Knives is planning a night raid to free a caged fighter held for debt under the butcher's private vault — he says there's something being kept down there that could pay every crew in the district.
3
Inspector Halvorsen whispers that a string of forged shipping manifests points to a hidden ledger kept beneath the cellar floor — someone is moving meat and coin out of the city by night.
