Vorgrin Sentrylord
Ambush Regent
Vorgrin Sentrylords are small, wiry goblin commanders who make waiting into a weapon. They prefer to hold a single choke point for days, bored and watchful, learning the rhythms of patrols and trade caravans until a single perfectly timed order turns a common path into a slaughterhouse. What makes them terrifying at the table is their patient cunning: they build ambushes that punish haste, coordinate allies with a single whispered signal, and turn surprise into a tactical multiplier that leaves even seasoned adventurers reeling.

Multiattack. The Vorgrin Sentrylord makes two Scimitar attacks.
Scimitar. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+2) slashing damage.
Waited Strike. If the Vorgrin Sentrylord begins its turn hidden or otherwise not having moved since the end of its last turn and then hits with an attack on that turn, the attack deals an extra 7 (2d6) piercing damage (included in the attack).
Tactical Shout (Recharge 5-6). The Sentrylord shouts crisp orders. Each creature of the Sentrylord's choice that can hear it within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on attack rolls until the end of the Sentrylord's next turn. Allies designated by the Sentrylord gain advantage on their first attack roll before the end of the Sentrylord's next turn.
Quick Guard. When a creature the Sentrylord can see attacks an ally within 5 feet of the Sentrylord, the Sentrylord can use its reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll (the Sentrylord must be able to see both attacker and ally).
Vorgrin Sentrylords are the product of goblin warrens that learned siegecraft by watching human forts crumble from within. A Sentrylord is not merely a warrior but a master of delay: keeping sentries at precise intervals, laying false trails, and training captives to stumble into set traps. They are rarely the leaders of vast hordes; instead, they rule narrow, strategic knots of territory — ruined bridges, narrow mine shafts, and collapsed gatehouses — where their patience yields outsized returns. Scholars of frontier warfare, such as Masterwright Edrun of the Bastion Registry, note that Vorgrin Sentrylords often wear tokens from fallen enemies to remind themselves of past victories and to bait potential rescuers. The Guild of Broken Spears (a loose ring of outcast mercenaries and exiles) keeps dossiers on several known Sentrylords and will pay handsomely for their heads, though few company captains relish the long, careful stalking necessary to capture one. Legends say a Sentrylord once held a mountain pass for an entire season against two rival warbands and a patrol of mounted knights, defeating them not by strength but by patience and perfectly timed strikes.
A Vorgrin Sentrylord is a slight goblin, shorter than a human's knee but lean and tightly muscled. Their skin ranges from dusky olive to sickly green; veins stand out across thin forearms from long waits in cold vantage points. They wear a patchwork of scavenged leather — pieces layered for silence rather than protection — and a tattered cloak mottled to match moss and lichen. Their head is crowned not with jewels but with pins and trinkets: a broken coin, a soldier's button, a strip of mirror, each nailed into a leather band. The Sentrylord's eyes are bright, ringed with dark shadow from sleepless stakeouts; their teeth are sharp and often stained with iron. Weapons are compact and precise: a short, blunt-tipped scimitar for close work and a long hunting spear used to pin fleeing foes. Small ropes, caltrops, and folded tripwires hang from belts. An artist should emphasize thin, angular cheekbones, a gaunt, eager smile, and the way their cloak hangs in stiff, careful folds—suggesting many nights spent motionless and ready.
