The Wheelwright's Lantern
the mill at the turn of midnight
You push through a swinging half-door and the scent of warm grain and stale ale hits you first, layered with a faint cold of river-mist that doesn't belong indoors. The main room is ringed by rough-hewn beams; sacks of milled grain line one wall and a low iron trough runs under the bar where the mill’s flume once fed the wheel. Lantern light pools over tables; shadows gather in the spaces between, and if you listen you can hear a soft, steady turning—like a wheel in water—though the sluice outside is dry. When night falls the wheel's sound grows plain enough to follow: a slow creak, the hollowing thud of wood on stone. Locals avert their eyes when it happens; newcomers stare at the dark window where the wheel is visible, turning against the moon. The room is full of people who came for a hot meal and stayed because the place feels like somewhere the past hasn't quite let go.
A weathered oaken board carved with a lantern cradling a wooden millwheel; iron hoop rusted, lantern glass cracked but its etching of a moonlit stream remains visible. No words—just the wheel and a single iron nail hammered where a face would be.

Midnight Mill Toddy
5 spA hot mix of gristwater, spiced honey, and a pinch of charred grain; it warms the bones and brings dreams of flowing water for an hour (advantage on saving throws against fear while the drink's warmth lasts).

1
The Drowned Rune: villagers whisper that a carved rune taken from the Blackwater graveyard was hidden in the millstone and that if anyone speaks the rune's true name the wheel will grind bones.
2
The Hollow Grindstone: Maren Fleet says a silver locket was sealed under the central millstone when the miller drowned and that whoever opens it will learn why the wheel keeps turning.
3
The Blackwater Stream: Old Jorren swore he saw a submerged road under the stream where a ruined chapel lies; the chapel's altar supposedly holds a millwright's key that will stop or bind restless water spirits.
