The Three Turnings
the hill-farm inn beneath the old ridge
Warm smoke and rosemary greet you before the door swings fully open: hearthlight spills across worn boards, kettles hiss on iron hooks and a patchwork of quilts hangs from the rafters to keep drafts at bay. The crowd is a patient mix of farmhands folding over maps, a woman sewing by lamplight, and two children trading marbles on a bench; everyone speaks in low, familiar tones, and a pot of something rich and aromatic simmers at the end of the bar. Shelves of jars and dried herbs line the back wall; potted thyme and a small row of dwarfing apple saplings stand by the windows, their leaves pressed to the glass like listeners.
A hand-carved wooden disk shows three concentric spirals like furrows; the paint is faded but the spirals catch the light. No words, just a smudge of grease where hands have long touched it.

Gorrit Fen · stablehand
A mountain of a man who favors silence and bruised apples; he'll lend a hand with a cart but will watch strangers like a hound.
Merek Toll
A sheep-farmer who tends the ridgefields; he swears the standing stone on Crow's Ridge thrummed in the rain and that one of his sheep found a carved iron token.
Widow Pel
An elderly herbalist who keeps a shelf of jars in Bramwell's back pantry and is always sniffing the stew for 'a new root' to test.
Jory and Kett
A pair of journeyman millwrights passing through; they're looking for a lost ledger their foreman says fell off the cart near Old Mill Hollow.
1

2
Old Mill Hollow's ledger is missing and Jory and Kett's foreman swears there's a page in it listing a paid bribe to someone called 'the Hillcloak'.
3
A cold light has been seen under Widow Pel's herb-shelves; she claims a sapling sprouted overnight where no seed was sown.
