The Split Orchard Table
where two families drink from the same barrel
The room smells of pressed apples and hot grease; steam fogs the low windows and the rafters ring with shouts, knives clinking on wood, and the thud of a tossed stool. Long benches seat families opposite one another, and the barkeep slides tankards along the same scarred plank between tight-lipped relatives who'd sooner scowl than speak. Lantern light pools over cider stains and a shelf of mismatched tankards; every so often a chorus of laughter snaps into silence when an old quarrel is mentioned, then the room roars again as someone pounds the table to drown it out.
A weathered wooden board carved with two stubby apple trees whose roots twist into one another; the paint is flaked away and someone has driven two small nails through the right-hand tree as if to mark it.

Truce Cup
4 cpA small, hot spiced cider with a pinch of crushed juniper; it's served in a chipped wooden cup and, by tradition, passed between disputing parties to mark a single hour of silence. Drinking it grants advantage on one Charisma (Persuasion) or Wisdom (Insight) check made in the next hour when dealing with someone from the opposite family.

Mish Cole · barmaid
Fast with a tankard and faster with a rumor; she keeps the feuding sides from strings of blows with sly smiles and spilled cider.
Gorvem Pike · bouncer
A square-jawed ex-forester who stands in the doorway and lets no one into the cellar without Brenn's call.
Heddon Thatch
Patriarch of the Thatch family, a blunt farmer who drinks his anger and looks for any slight as a debt to be repaid.
Rannik Dale
Matron of the Dale kin, bespectacled, sharp-tongued, and forever counting losses — she wants the Thatches to pay for last year's ruined harvest.
Ivor Gell
An uneasy fence who profits from both sides by selling salvage; he quietly wants a chance to push one family out of the market entirely.
1
Someone saw Ibar Thatch slip into the ruined orchard behind Miller's Well three nights ago — Heddon Thatch is offering coin for anyone who finds his son.
2
The old cider press in the Hollow's Barn is said to be enchanted: barrels pressed there put a spell on one who drinks from them; Rannik Dale suspects the Thatches use that press to make people obedient.
3
A ledger listing customers and unpaid debts has gone missing from Ivor Gell's stall; Ivor will pay handsomely for its return and claims it names members of both the Thatch and Dale houses.
