Vorunth

Temple-Sworn Maw

Vorunth is a gargantuan, devout horror: a krakenoid priest that literally swallowed its temple, its ribs fused to carved stone and stained altar-blood. It drifts through ocean trenches like a living cathedral, chanting in a deep, keening voice that vibrates water itself. Combat with Vorunth is claustrophobic — its writhing tentacles smash foes into mosaic floors cramped inside its belly, while holy wards embedded in its flesh burst with sacramental power. The thing is terrifying not only for its violent reach and arcane might, but for the sense that each blow only further enshrines the cultic rites grinding in its gut.

Actions

Multiattack. Vorunth makes three Tentacle attacks. If at least one of those attacks hits, it can make one Bite attack against a target it has struck with a Tentacle this turn.

Tentacle. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it is grappled (escape DC 16) and restrained until the grapple ends. Vorunth can grapple up to three Large or smaller creatures at once.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d10+4) piercing damage. If the target is restrained by Vorunth, the bite deals an additional 9 (2d8) acid damage as digestive enzymes burn through armor.

Enshrined Chant (Recharge 5-6). Vorunth intones a low, ritual tone. Each creature of Vorunth's choice within 60 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn as psychic hymns echo in its mind. Creatures that succeed are frightened until the end of their next turn instead.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If Vorunth fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Spellcasting. Vorunth is a 10th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 16, +8 to hit with spell attacks). Vorunth knows the following cleric-like spells (requires no material components): At will: thaumaturgy, shape water, guidance 3/day each: hold person, guardian of faith 1/day each: control water, wall of water

Reactions

Sanctuary Echo. When a creature Vorunth can see within 30 feet attacks it, Vorunth can cause the attacker to take 7 (2d6) psychic damage as holy wards lash back. Vorunth can use this reaction a number of times equal to its Charisma modifier (4), regaining uses on a long rest.

Lore

Vorunth was once a mortal pontiff of a drowned city called Rhuun-Ket, a temple-town famed for offerings to the deep. When the sea took Rhuun-Ket, Vorunth refused to accept death and performed a sacrilegious rite: he fused his spirit to the temple itself, letting kelp and bone become flesh. Over generations his followers became a secretive cabal called the Choir of the Hollow Nave, who still prowl wrecked coastlines to usher sacrificial victims into his waiting maw. Vorunth prefers abyssal trenches and the collapsed vaults of sunken cities where pressure and darkness hide its enormous frame. It devours temple sites whole — priests, reliquaries and sanctums alike — then moves on, leaving sterile shoals and whispered warnings among sailors. Mariners and scholars of the Deep Directorate (a guild of bathymancers in the port of Kel-Ur) debate whether Vorunth hungers for faith, relics, or is simply a living reliquary sustained by the prayers that echo inside it. Several expeditions, including one led by the scholar-archaeologist Iseth Morn, failed to retrieve artifacts once swallowed by Vorunth; some survivors claim the inner sanctum rearranged itself like a labyrinth to punish intruders.

Appearance

Vorunth is the size of a small ship: its body is a mass of mottled black-blue flesh and barnacled stone. From its lower flanks sprout eight thick tentacles, each the girth of a tree trunk and armored with overlapping plates of shell and chiseled basalt — carved glyphs and faded fresco fragments peer from between folds of flesh. Embedded along its back and sides are ruined architectural features: broken columns that rise like ribs, a collapsed pediment fused to a shoulder, and a cracked mosaic visible through a translucent membrane that pulses with dim light. Where its face should be, a yawning maw is rimmed with tooth-like coral spires; above that, two lidless, lamp-like eyes glow with phosphorescent script. The creature's interior, glimpsed when it opens its cavernous throat, shows carved pews, a water-dark altar, and prayer banners entwined with kelp.
