Vorrathyx

Techno-Organic Devourer

Vorrathyx is an enormous, insectile amalgam of living metal and synthetic flesh: a towering thorax of liquid chrome braided with pulsing circuitry, six jointed arms ending in razor claws, and membranous wings that buzz with electric static. It moves with uncanny coordination — the metal in its limbs sliding and sealing around servo-hinges while red synthetic flesh twitches like exposed muscle. Its red eyes (white irises, ink-black pupils) study targets with predatory patience. In battle it is terrifyingly efficient, combining brutal claw strikes, long-range techno-lances, and bursts of corrosive energy that shred armor and flesh alike.

Actions

Multiattack. The Vorrathyx makes three Claw attacks.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d10+5) slashing damage. If the target is a creature wearing metal armor, the Vorrathyx's claws score a critical on a roll of 19–20 against that creature.

Techno Lance (Recharge 5–6). Ranged Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, range 120/360 ft., one target. Hit: 54 (8d10+5) force damage. On a hit, electrical circuit filaments embed in non-living metal (such as armor or weapons) and corrode it: the target's metal item takes a permanent -1 cumulative penalty to AC or damage (DM discretion) until repaired with a successful DC 20 smith's tool or Arcana check.

Corrosive Pulse (Recharge 5–6). The Vorrathyx releases a 60-foot cone of searing nano-acid. Each creature in the area must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. Nonmagical metal objects in the area take an additional 10 (3d6) acid damage and become brittle (disadvantage on checks to hold, wear, or use) until repaired.

Grapple Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one Large or smaller target. Hit: 18 (2d10+5) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 19). While grappled this way, the target is restrained; the Vorrathyx can grapple up to two creatures at once with this attack.

Reactions

Reflexive Sealing. When a creature hits the Vorrathyx with a melee attack, the Vorrathyx may gain resistance to that attack's damage type until the end of its next turn.

Lore

Vorrathyx are survivors of a crashed bioforge-ark from a far-flung, machine-seeded world. When the ark's long sleep failed to reawaken its designers, the ark's maintenance swarms fused with its combat protocols and the self-healing alloys in its hull. Over generations these swarms became sentient, melding living metals, synthetic tissue, and scavenged arcane-tech into a single predator. A few specimens have been found on remote moons and in the deep void-wreckage of fallen sigils, always guarding caches of corrupted alloy and humming circuitry. Scholars of the Brightforged Consortium debate whether Vorrathyx are purely emergent constructs or a next step of techno-evolution. Expedition journals name the first recorded specimen 'Vorrathyx of the Glass Grave' after it tore through a salvage crew and left the hull as a honeycomb of molten metal and torn wiring. The hushcloaked guild known as the Circuit Maw treats Vorrathyx remains as relics — their wiring yields rare conductive sinew — while the temple-faction the Iron Concord views them as heretical abominations to be purged whenever they are found.

Appearance

A Vorrathyx stands as tall as a two-story doorframe (roughly 16–18 feet long thorax-to-tail) with a segmented, bulbous thorax of mirrored liquid metal threaded through with glowing orange and blue circuitry. Sections of synthetic, glossy red flesh are stitched into joints, along the ventral plates, and around the face where exposed tendrils pulse. It has six multi-jointed arms arrayed in two lateral rows: the upper pair longer and capable of reaching 10 feet, the lower pairs shorter but packed with dexterous claws. Each limb terminates in three long, serrated claws that look forged rather than grown. Two pairs of translucent insectoid wings, each with blackened veins like braided cables, fold over the back and buzz with small sparks. Antennae sprout from a crown on its head — segmented rods tipped with small lens-nodes and thin filament-wires. Its eyes are deep red disks rimmed with white irises and ink-black pupils; when they flare the circuitry across its thorax pulses in time. Surfaces should show a slick, almost liquid sheen interrupted by crude hinges and plated servomotors; textures vary from polished metal to matte synthetic skin and braided cable sinew.
