Mirethrak

Peatbound Colossus

A Mirethrak is a hulking, peat-encrusted giant that spends years buried beneath bog and fen, slowly digesting the waterlogged earth around it. When it finally rouses, it erupts from the peat like a rupturing hill—matted with roots, blackened moss, and clotted mire—toppling trees and sucking the breath from smaller creatures with the stench of rot. Its slow, deliberate movements and the wet, sucking sound of its footsteps make every encounter feel like the ground itself is trying to pull the party apart.

Actions

Multiattack. The Mirethrak makes two Slam attacks.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage.

Peat Surge (Recharge 5-6). The Mirethrak pounds the peat around it, causing a 15-foot-radius area centered on it to erupt with choking muck. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone, take 10 (3d6) bludgeoning damage, and become restrained by clinging peat until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, a creature takes half damage and isn't restrained.

Lore

Folklore of the Fenwatchers speaks of Mirethrak as ancient wardens of drowned lowlands. They are said to be born when an unusually large humanoid dies and is slowly compressed and reborn by layers of peat and tangled roots; over decades the peat hardens into a crust that becomes the giant's first skin. Mirethrak sleep for ten or more years, feeding on buried wood, submerged animals, and the acidic humus that suffuses their lairs. Scholars like Maris Sable of Thatch Abbey argue Mirethrak are not solitary predators so much as ecological engineers: their periodic eruptions aerate bogs, topple overgrown willow stands, and create pools that other species depend on. The Fenwatchers trade warnings about Mirethrak during migration season—bands of peat-gatherers know to mark old breathing hummocks and avoid them for a generation. Raiders who try to harvest a sleeping Mirethrak's peat-wrapped hides often find the ‘corpse’ wrenched free and furious at trespassers for miles.

Appearance

Envision a mountain of a humanoid, roughly the height of a large doorway when crouched, with limbs thick as tree trunks. Its skin is dark, mottled with sodden peat and layered strips of decomposed reeds that hang in clumps. Lichen and moss carpet its shoulders and scalp; its hair is a tangled mat of roots and reeds streaked with bogwater. Eyes are small and set deep, pupil-like pools that glow faintly with a greenish sheen in low light. Fingers end in stubby, soil-caked nails that look more like flint than flesh. The surface of its body is textured—peat crusts cracked in places to show pale, muscular tissue beneath; wherever it moves, mud and trailing sphagnum peel away in clumps.
