Marrow-Countess Veltren

Undying Matron of the Gullet

A bloated hill-giant body warped around the dessicated torso and jeweled corset of a long-dead noble, the Marrow-Countess Veltren exudes aristocratic malice and the scent of rot. Her cavernous belly gurgles with the tiny, clawing shapes that press against the skin from within; with a wet, choking sound she can birth a clutch of animated dead to swarm her foes. She moves with surprising purpose for her size, shrugging aside swords with bony, elegant hands and answering threats with a high, mirthless laugh that chills the marrow.

Actions

Multiattack. The Marrow-Countess makes two Slam attacks.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d10+3) bludgeoning damage.

Guttural Birth (Recharge 5-6). The Countess retches and expels undead brood from her abdomen. 1d4 skeletons (use the skeleton stat block) erupt from her belly into unoccupied spaces within 10 feet and act on the Countess's initiative after her turn. The brood does not appear if there is no valid space. The Countess can command each thrall with a bonus action to delay, move up to its speed, or attack.

Fetid Regard. Any creature that starts its turn within 5 feet of the Countess must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take 4 (1d8) necrotic damage and be nauseated with disadvantage on attack rolls until the start of its next turn. A creature that succeeds on the save takes half damage and suffers no other effect.

Lore

Veltren was once Countess Veltren of House Merov, a cruel matron who bartered with necromancers to lengthen her reign. When a peasant uprising ended her life, two rival cabals of corpse-scholars fused her corpse with the body of a slain hill giant in a forbidden experiment meant to create an immortal aristocrat with the giant’s might. The ritual succeeded in a way neither cabal anticipated: the noble’s pride and hunger became a ravenous brood-matriarch, and her new flesh produced small undead that hatched from her abdomen like malformed heirs. Tales of Veltren cluster around ruined manor-halls built atop glades where giant bones jut from the earth. The Mortuary Covenant of Seldun catalogued her at length; Archivist Vinterg recorded sightings of her leaving a trail of tattered gowns and gnawed bone along the roads south of Kethru Fen. Hunters note that Veltren preys mostly on caravans and isolated manors, guiding her brood to tear households apart while she gathers trophies—signet rings, locks of hair, preserved portraits—from the corpses of prominent victims. Regional legends claim she is searching for a proper tomb fit for a countess, but those who survive an encounter whisper that her brood is her true legacy, and that each new minion carries a shard of House Merov’s aristocratic spite.

Appearance

Height about 12–14 feet from toe to the top of a twisted bonnet-like skullpiece. The lower torso is enormous and hill-giant in proportion: lumpy, bruised grey flesh stretched tight over knobbly ribs and a swollen abdomen punctured with vertical, puckered mouths and thin skin through which pale immature skeletons and shard-like teeth squirm. From the waist up, the creature retains the stiff posture and fashion of a noblewoman: a crushed velvet bodice sewn into the giant flesh, a collar of rusted metal and cracked gems around a neck of exposed vertebrae, and a powdered, cadaverous face with glassy, sunken eyes. Long bony fingers end in blackened nails; one hand is often used to pluck ivory pins from the jowls of her brood as if organizing servants. Textures: cracked dried skin around the face; slick, mucus-sheened belly with threadlike veins; rags of silk and tarnished jewelry embedded in flesh. Scale: stands nearly as tall as a two-story doorway, hulking over a human which would reach roughly to the Countess’s knee.
