Gossmer Finkcap
Capricious Shoe-Swapper
A small mushroom-capped trickster with nimble, ink-stained fingers and an impish grin, the Gossmer Finkcap delights in tiny mischief: stealing or swapping the shoes of sleeping infants so that morn reveals mismatched soles and baffled parents. It is more prankster than predator, but its glee is unsettling—it leaves notes folded from birch bark, humming warped nursery rhymes under its breath, and can turn a quiet hamlet into a restless night of misplaced slippers and whispered accusations.

Multiattack. The finkcap makes two Sly Jab attacks.
Sly Jab. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4+1) piercing damage.
Mischief of the Cap (Recharge 5-6). The finkcap chooses one unattended pair of footwear within 30 feet. The shoes instantly swap places with another unattended pair the finkcap can see within 30 feet, or if there is none, the chosen pair vanishes with a soft pop and reappears placed neatly on a random sleeping creature's feet within range. If a sleeping creature receives the shoes, the creature must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be disturbed and wake at the end of its turn, groggy (disadvantage on the first attack roll or saving throw it makes before the end of its next turn). A creature that inspects an empty spot where shoes were finds faint spores and a folded birch-bark note with a rhyme.
Gossmer Finkcaps are spring-born fey most commonly found on the mossy margins of hedgerows, old orchards, and the shaded banks of streams where children play. They favor settlements with tidy routines and orderly households; the sharper the household's sense of propriety, the more likely a Finkcap is to make it an object lesson in chaos. Storytellers say a single Finkcap prefers a circuit of three to five houses and returns to the same cradle on different nights until its mischief is acknowledged with a token — a ribbon, a bright button, or a small crumb cake left on the threshold. Scholars of the uncanny like Archivist Nollem of the Widdershade Repository have cataloged Finkcaps' habits and warn that while many encounters end in laughter once shoes are reunited, some Finkcaps escalate their pranks into social rifts if insulted or trapped. The halfling council of Brindleford once chased a Finkcap into a hollow oak; the prankster cursed their bellows so that pigs would not answer calls for a year. Folktales advise placating these beings with a small offering and a verse changed to include their name — a practice locals call "minding the cap."
Roughly two to three feet tall, the Gossmer Finkcap has a rotund, humanoid torso cloaked in soft, velvety fuzz the color of damp twigs. Its head is dominated by a bulbous mushroom cap streaked with russet and pale freckling; the underside of the cap is lined with thin, translucent gills that flutter when it cackles. Its face is narrow and clever, with wide amber eyes rimmed in darker spores and a crooked smile revealing tiny, flat teeth. Limbs are long and wiry—dexterous hands with four tapered fingers and faint webbing between them, perfect for slipping shoes on and off without waking a sleeper. Its feet are deceptively small and padded like a hare's. Patches of bioluminescent mycelium trace its shoulders and spine, faintly glowing when it is delighted or alarmed. Scale: about knee-high to a human adult, often pictured perched on a cradle rail or crouched behind a low hearth.
