Garrulex
The Unfinished Courier
A headless figure in tattered courier's livery shambles down roads and alleys with a stiff arm forever outstretched, clutching a single water-stained letter. Its neck is a ragged stump that weeps shadow-ink, and although it cannot speak it will not rest until that letter reaches its intended hands — and those who read it discover its last, bitter command. The Garrulex is unnerving in motion: its body is deliberate and patient, pursuing a route learned in life with obsessive fidelity, indifferent to threats and frighteningly hard to stop.

Multiattack. The creature makes two Claw attacks.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8+1) slashing damage.
Last Missive. Ranged Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (2d4+2) psychic damage. The target must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or be haunted by the courier's intent: it has disadvantage on attack rolls and cannot take reactions until the end of its next turn as whispers and images of the letter distract it.
Garrulex were once couriers of a coastal guild, sworn to deliver messages regardless of storm or siege. One winter a smallpox-swept ship docked with a sealed chest and a single, urgent letter bound in oilskin. The courier who accepted that chest was found days later without a head but still clutching the letter; within a week, others who read that message vanished from their homes. Since then, isolated villages along old trade roads whisper of the Unfinished Courier — the dead messenger that keeps walking until a particular last missive is delivered. Scholars of the Mortuary Scriptorium posit that Garrulex are created when a missive is bound with a ritual known as the Knot of Obligation: an oath inked in blood and sealed with grief. The Order of the Wax-Seal keeps one battered ledger of sightings, and the historian Marrec Kest of Reedgate wrote that burning a letter before release can free the courier — though his claim is debated. Garrulex prefer old postal routes, waystations, and ruined mailrooms; they avoid crossroads used by living guilds and are said to recoil from ringing bells and the scent of copper ink.
Imagine a once-proud courier garbed in a water-darkened, knee-length coat whose brass buttons are pitted with age. The head is a raw neck stump wrapped in frayed bandage and darkened with dried sap and ink; thin black wisps of ectoplasm rise and curl from the wound. One arm is rigid, elbow locked, hand clenched tightly around an oilskin letter creased with thumbprints. The other arm swings with uncanny regularity. The coat hangs in strips, revealing pale, mottled skin stitched and bound with twine where the courier's pack was lashed. The boots are scuffed to bare leather; the whole form emits faint smears of writing visible on the inside of the coat — folded addresses and impossible postmarks. Scale: about the size of a human courier, 5–6 ft. tall; show it in a rain-slick alley by a tavern door, hand thrust toward an unseen recipient.
