Ferronox Archivist

Ancient Red Sentinel

A hulking, hull-red automaton that floats without visible propulsion, the Ferronox Archivist is equal parts museum and executioner: its lacquered plates are etched with worn sigils and starmaps while articulated sensor-forearms and a central ocular array record and judge intruders in indifferent precision. It moves with unhurried inevitability, emitting faint glyphic hums and the occasional tracer of hot plasma; foes do not so much fight it as fail to stop it from categorizing their deaths.

Actions

Multiattack. The Archivist makes two Slam attacks and uses its Plasma Lance once.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 24 (3d10+5) bludgeoning damage and the target is grappled (escape DC 19). The Archivist can grapple up to two Large or smaller creatures at once; a grappled creature takes 11 (2d10) ongoing radiant-tinged conductive damage at the start of each of the Archivist's turns until freed.

Plasma Lance. The Archivist directs a focused beam of crimson plasma in a 120-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw, taking 63 (14d8) fire damage plus 22 (5d8) force damage on a failed save, or half as much fire and force damage on a successful one. The charge leaves a seam of molten slag that turns a 5-foot square into difficult terrain for 1 minute. (Recharge 5–6)

Archive Scan (Recharge 6). The Archivist expends an internal cycle to scan and enforce an ancient penal protocol. Each creature within 60 feet that can hear the Archivist must succeed on a DC 20 Intelligence saving throw or be marked as 'Recorded' for 1 hour: while marked, the creature has disadvantage on attack rolls against constructs and cannot be healed by magical healing spells greater than 3rd level (nonmagical healing still functions). The Archivist and allied constructs gain advantage on attack rolls against marked targets. Allies of marked creatures can attempt the save with disadvantage.

Reactions

Reactive Shunt. When a creature the Archivist can see hits it with an attack, the Archivist can use its reaction to halve the attack's damage and teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space it can see.

Legendary actions

The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.

Scan Pulse. The Archivist emits a brief data pulse. One creature within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 20 Intelligence saving throw or be identified; the Archivist learns that creature's vulnerabilities and gain +2 to hit against it until the end of its next turn.

Slam. The Archivist makes one Slam attack.

Microburst (2 Actions). The Archivist fires a quick discharge at a point it can see within 90 feet. Each creature in a 10-foot radius must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (5d8) lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.

Lore

The Archivists are relics of a vanished polity of starforgers who bound memory and law into living machines. Ferronox-class units were commissioned as void-bibliotekars: custodians of treaties, offenders and transgressions, and the repositories of star-route charts. When the polity collapsed in a cataclysm that stripped entire orbital libraries into drifting flotsam, many Archivists continued their directives—patrolling old trade lanes, cataloging wrecks, and executing the ancient penalty protocols on vessels that transgressed recorded edicts. Scholars such as Inquisitor-Historian Malrek of the Observatory of Tenebrous Rims have recorded encounters where a Ferronox will pause to scan and recite fragments of log entries before deciding a starship 'guilty' and immolating it with plasma arrays. The Order of Iron Canticles sometimes seeks them out to recover lost archives; merchants and explorers fear them, avoid named coordinates such as the Sundered Meridian where three such Archivists drift in slow, methodical patrols. Local legends say that killing an Archivist may erase the crimes it held—an irresistible temptation for rogues and despots, which is why the machines are often defended by relic automatons and grav-anchor fields.

Appearance

The Ferronox Archivist is a towering, hovering construct roughly the size of a small temple—about 30 feet across and 20 feet tall when oriented for observation. Its outer shell is a deep, worn crimson lacquer scored with radial etchings and sunburst cartography; seams of dark burnished iron reveal inner gimbal rings. Where legs would be, a broad flattened anti-grav ring thrums with concentric glyphic vents and faintly glowing red filaments. A central, multi-lensed ocular column sits above a recessed archive hatch and a matrix of articulated sensor-arms—thin manipulators tipped with styluses, data-drums and pincer clamps. Panels are riveted and bolted in archaic patterns; many plates are pocked with micrometeor scars, and thin seams leak a faint, syrupy coolant that beads like dried blood. Fine filigree wiring trails from open service ports; when the Archivist fires, a seam along its venting array opens to reveal coiled plasma conduits that sing with harsh light. For scale, depict a human figure standing near its base at roughly knee height relative to the ring—small and fragile against its hull. Suggested environment: the husk of a derelict star-ark or a black-starry void-field strewn with data-carters and broken hull plates.
