Calcant Mireling
Fieldstone Ambusher
A low, hunched form that looks at first like an errant cairn, the Calcant Mireling explodes into motion when a careless traveler crosses its field. It moves with a stuttering, insectile gait, flinging fist-sized stones with uncanny aim while raking at prey with chitinous mandibles. In sunlight it seems to shimmer as if part plant and part geology — only its deliberate, hungry attention gives away that the rocks are not simply scenery.

Calcant Mirelings are creatures of wind-scoured grasslands where stone and soil intermingle. Folk songs in grazing provinces call them "rock-leeches"; shepherds tell of cairns that blink and swallow lost sheep. They are most common in fields littered with fractured limestone or glacial erratics, where their bodies accumulate mineral flecks and lichen, making them blend seamlessly with scattered rocks. Mirelings feed on insects, small mammals, and the mineral-rich sap of certain turf-rooted plants; they grind grit with powerful mandibles to supplement dietary needs, literally incorporating stone into their bodies. Scholars disagree on their origin. Archivist Merok of Thall argued that Calcant Mirelings are the aberrant offspring of fey experiments on the borderlands, while the Stonewardens, a rural guild of boundary-watchers, swear they are an ancient grassland predator driven from stony crags by changing climates. The truth may be a mixture of both: Mirelings are territorial and shy, becoming aggressive only around nests or when a grazed field holds too many prey. Legends say a single Mireling can form the kernel of a "stone cluster" — a small colony of blended bodies and mineral — over generations, and some farmers pay tithes to appease any such clusters found amid their pastures.
Compact, roughly the size of a large dog to a small pony, the Calcant Mireling's back is a mosaic of pebbles cemented into a ridged carapace. Its limbs are six jointed struts — the hind pair thick and muscle-bound, the front four nimble and tipped with blunt, keratinous claws for digging and grasping stones. The head is low and triangular, dominated by a beak-like mandible ringed with small grinding plates; two pigmentless, lidless eyes glint like polished flint. Between the pebbles on its back, tufts of coarse grass and pale lichens grow, and fine dust clings to the skin beneath. Surface textures vary: smooth riverstone plates on the shoulders, cracked shale around the flanks, and gritty sandy seams along the limbs. Overall scale: about 5 feet long and 3 feet tall at the shoulder — roughly the size of a field hay bale or a tall person crouching.
